Do You Actually Like Expensive Wine? Or Simply What It Represents?
Explore whether expensive wine reflects true taste or perceived status, and what you’re really paying for in the glass.

Do you really like expensive wine? Or is it that you like what expensive wine says about YOU?

The uncomfortable truth—most people can’t distinguish between a $30 bottle and a $300 bottle without context. Studies on blind tastings point to the facts: when people don’t know the price, they often can’t reliably tell the difference—and sometimes even prefer the cheaper wine. Trained tasters can pick up on quality more consistently, but for most people, price shapes perception more than the wine itself.

What many people actually taste when drinking expensive wine is a narrative. It’s the thrill of holding something rare, drinking something that signals you’ve arrived—or maybe it’s a subtle way to demonstrate that you are highly cultured and have access to premium things other people can’t afford.

But do you know the psychology behind why you chose that expensive bottle? These wines come with built-in assumptions before you even taste them. The labels, the regions, the history, the glitter— sparkling wine bottles compete for attention and scream “drink me!” through their glitz, glamour, and abundance of shiny rhinestones. Your brain quickly interprets these indicators as “premium quality,” whether you can confirm it later or not.

What you’re responding to isn’t just flavor—it’s permission to feel refined, included, and worthy of a premium experience off-limits to many others. Wine has always been tied to power, class, and access, so that tracks. If you’re purposely choosing an expensive bottle for the sake of it without knowing how to assess or appreciate its true quality, you’re simply purchasing an expensive narrative. And guess what…if that’s your truth, there’s nothing wrong with owning that!

But if actually loving the wine you are drinking is important to you, the risk you take is spending years chasing what you think you’re supposed to like instead of using that time to discover what you truly like.

So back to retail price, do you know what you’re really paying for?

– You’re paying for the name on the label
– You’re paying for expensive land leases

– You’re paying for the region’s reputation
– You’re paying for the age (sometimes years)

In short, you’re paying for the cost of oak, land, labor, and patience, and for every hand it passed through before it landed on your table. Often, that adds up to premium quality and an extraordinary expression of wine! But other times, it’s just an expensive bottle of wine whose production costs were passed down to you, the consumer. So, like most wine-drinkers, would you be able to tell if its really worthy of that expensive sticker price?

Before you purchase your next bottle, ask yourself:

"Am I drinking a wine just because it's expensive? Or am I drinking it because I truly love and appreciate how it tastes?"

I’ll share a secret: the real flex is not chasing a fantasy, but discovering the wine you truly enjoy drinking.
