Balance is when the main parts of a wine—acidity, sweetness, tannins, alcohol, and body—work together so none of them stick out. A balanced wine doesn’t have to be “smooth” or “soft”; it can be bright, bold, or structured, but it feels cohesive and intentional. If one element dominates (too hot from alcohol, too sharp from acidity, too drying from tannins, or too sweet without lift), the wine can feel awkward or tiring to drink. Balance is what makes a wine feel complete from first sip to finish.
