Today’s 1 Minute Read: What “Dry” Wine Means
What does “dry wine” actually mean? In this one-minute read, learn how dryness in wine is defined, why it has nothing to do with taste or tannins, and how residual sugar determines whether a wine is considered dry.

When a wine is described as dry, it simply means the sugar has been fully fermented into alcohol, leaving little to no sweetness behind. Dry wines can still taste fruity—fruit flavors like lemon, apple, or cherry come from the grape itself, not sugar. Most red wines and many popular whites, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay, are dry by default. Once you understand this, wine labels and menus stop feeling confusing and start making sense.
