The U.S. primarily uses the AVA system (American Viticultural Area), which defines geographic boundaries but does not regulate grape varieties or wine-making methods the way French AOP or Italian DOC systems do.
If a grape variety appears on the label, at least 75% of the wine must be that variety. If a region appears, 85% must come from that area.
