Overview
Pinotage is a distinctive red wine grape strongly associated with South Africa. It produces bold wines with dark fruit flavors, earthy notes, and sometimes smoky or savory characteristics. Pinotage wines can range from fruit-forward and approachable styles to more complex wines with depth and structure. The grape has become one of South Africa’s most recognizable wine varieties.
Grape Origin
Pinotage originated in South Africa in 1925 when Professor Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsault (which was historically called Hermitage in South Africa). The goal was to combine the elegance of Pinot Noir with the durability and productivity of Cinsault. The result was Pinotage, a uniquely South African grape that has become a signature variety for the country.
