Chardonnay

Overview

Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted and recognized white wine grapes in the world. Known for its versatility, it can produce wines that range from crisp and mineral-driven to rich and creamy depending on climate and wine-making style. The grape is strongly associated with Burgundy, France, but today it thrives in many major wine regions including California, Australia, and Chile.

Grape Origin

Chardonnay originated in Burgundy, France, where it has been cultivated for centuries and remains the dominant white grape of the region. DNA research has shown that Chardonnay is a natural crossing between Pinot and Gouais Blanc, two grapes responsible for many important European varieties. The grape’s adaptability has helped it spread to vineyards across the world.
